NY Elections
New York election laws pervert the purpose of elections. The purpose of elections is to spur debate on a wide range of issues and to not waste a vote. Right now, unaffiliated voters are blocked from voting in primaries. No voter should be shut out. With open primaries any voter can vote for any candidate in the primaries. With a wider electorate to court, a diverse range of ideas would be discussed instead of catering to the fanatics in its own party. This is further exacerbated by the Democratic Machine (monopoly) that can drown out any voice and control the NYC primaries to which the primaries have become the general election. Any monopoly even a benevolent one does harm because they believe they are holier than thou. Elected positions weren’t meant to be careers. Without term limits, officials believe they can do anything.
We need fair and inclusive elections. We need:
Open Primaries
Term Limits
Easier Unaffiliated Candidate Ballot Access
State-Wide Rank Choice Voting
